Lumpy Weekly 40: Frogs
TheOdditey's Description
Vaposavium Arbor, commonly known as the Smoke-throat tree frog (or just the smoke-throat frog) is a species of amphibian that, despite the name, is actually more so related to pond frogs than true tree frogs. The most obvious differentiation from most other species of frog is it's ability to create plumes of smoke through its mouth. These foul smelling smoke signals are used not only to attract the fly's that it feeds on, but also to locate potential mates.

In an odd case of convergent evolution with reptiles this interesting amphibian actually lays hard-shelled eggs. These shells both allow it's tadpoles to emerge much later and more advanced than their soft-shelled cousins, but also keep safe from most predators while doing it. An advantage the tadpoles gain from being born much later in their ontogeny is that they have much less of a reliance on water; allowing them to stay in the safety of the trees for up to a week before their amphibious nature catches up to them.
